How to modify a hairband to secure your cochlear implant: Gaia's Headband

How to modify a hairband to secure your cochlear implant:
Gaia's Headband

After her CI surgery, Gaia needed a headband to secure her processor for sport and play. We tried several models, yet consistently found difficulty inserting the cable and coil in the options available: we had to take apart the coil and cable every time, and this created problems.

With the help of many amazing friends (above all, Mamma Nicoletta), we tried to create a quick, practical and economical solution that resulted in “Gaia’s Headband for Cochlear Implant Recipients”. We are not seeking a patent for the headband, because we would like to make it available to all through the following instructions:

In order to create the headband, you will need the following materials:

A headband that is 95% cotton and 5% lycra – 5 cm. in height;  4 cm. of an elastic strip that is 2.5 cm in height and a 4 cm. elastic strip that is 0.5 cm in height.

Step 1: Starting from the center of the headband (it will be the back) leave 5 cm, and create a bottom hole that is 3.5 cm. long, 3 cm. from the base.

Step 2: Sew parallel elastic strips of 0.5 cm above the bottom hole, and just below the hole, repeat the same operation with the 2.5 cm. elastic strips.

For bilateral recipients, repeat the same procedure on the other side of the headband.
